The Compassion is a ship featured in Crimson Skies. It is a red cross hospital ship that was responding to the downed USSR Zeppelin Worker's Voyage when it came under attack by a new, ruthless, pirate gang named the Black Hats. Nathan Zachary and the Fortune Hunters heard the distress call the Compassion put out and flew over to it in their zeppelin Pandora to aid the Compassion. At first, the Fortune Hunters were confused at why Zachary wished to help,[1] but he revealed that the zeppelin was the Worker's Voyage, a zeppelin that the Fortune Hunters themselves had attacked to rescue Wilhelm Fassenbiender, destroying its fighter escort and defensive turrets.[2] As a result, the Worker's Voyage was shot down and crashed, resulting in the Compassion being sent to its aid.[3]
Zachary theorized that the Black Hats wanted to capture the passengers of the Worker's Voyage and ransom them back to their families, and sinking the Compassion would safeguard them against being followed.[1] The Black Hats were already well under way with their attack on the Compassion, with several Patrol Boats already in the water and attacking the Compassion. The Fortune Hunters arrived and destroyed the boats, however more Black Hats came to support the attack, dropping boats on Battle Balloons and sending in Fairchild F611 Brigands to chase away the Fortune Hunters. Unfortunately, they were shot down and the battle balloons destroyed before they could drop off their boats, causing more Brigands, balloons and the Black Hat Ace Dixon to be sent in as a last attempt to destroy the Compassion. This ultimately proved to be futile as this fresh wave was also destroyed, with Ace Dixon being downed. This was enough for the Black Hats too give up, leaving the Compassion alone to rescue the passengers of the Worker's Voyage.[3]
