Crimson Skies Wiki

The Lockheed Corporation is a company featured in Crimson Skies and the Crimson Skies Board Game. The company was formed by Allan and Malcom Loughhead, who would change their surnames to Lockheed prior to founding the company.[1] Founded in 1932 after several years of design experiments, Lockheed can trace its first aircraft to 1913 when the brothers flew their first plane over San Francisco Bay.[1]

Recognizing that many companies focused on military and leisure aircraft, Lockheed instead developed larger cargo and passenger craft that were lacking from any other company.[1] This bold move paid off for them, and they quickly amassed a fortune from sales. After a few years of rivalry,[1] Lockheed began working alongside Hughes Aviation in developing joint designs, sharing Hughes' advanced designs and technology with Lockheed's marketing and production resources.[1] The result of this partnership was the Hughes-Lockheed Firebrand.[1]

The culmination of a new partnership with Hughes Aviation, the Lockheed debuted in early 1937 with a unique flying wing design.[2] The aircraft was introduced for the Nation of Hollywood who used most of the roughly 60 aircraft in their own militia squadrons.[2] The Firebrand was well armed and had long range, allowing it to patrol the vast Hollywood lands.

Gunslinger[]

Main article: Lockheed Gunslinger

The Gunslinger was an ambitious bomber development using what Lockheed learnt from the Firebrand. The Gunslinger, like the fighter craft, was a flying wing design using pusher engines with an exceptionally impressive operational range.[3] The design doubled the number of engines from two to four, and uniquely used parasite fighters for defence rather than having the bomber armed with turrets or main guns. These parasite fighters were a Hughes input for the bomber, developing the Hughes Aircraft Bloodhawk "E" from their famed Hughes Bloodhawk fighter,[4] and the Gunslinger carried three on racks ready for deployment.[4]
