The Mercury was a Zeppelin featured in Crimson Skies. It was a cargo zeppelin operated by Blake Aviation Security which was ambushed by the Black Hats pirate gang and their zeppelin the Dark Derby.[1]

The Mercury was travelling in convoy with another Blake Aviation zeppelin the Twain[1] when a large group of Black Hat fighters ambushed the convoy in a premeditated strike[2]. Armed with Curtiss-Wright P2 Warhawks and Fairchild F611 Brigands, the Warhawks first targeted the Twain with Aerial torpedoes while the Brigands distracted the escorting William & Colt Peacemaker 370s. Unexpected help came in the form of Nathan Zachary and the Fortune Hunters who arrived on the scene with their zeppelin the Pandora.[1]

Blake was sceptical at the arrival of the Fortune Hunters, despite Zachary attempting to convince him that they were on his side. Even after the loss of the Twain and the Fortune Hunters shooting down several Black Hats, it required all the Black hats to be downed before Blake would accept that Zachary and his gang were friendly.[1]

However, as soon as the first wave was destroyed, a second wave of Black Hat Warhawks and Brigands started making their way towards the Murcury with their own zeppelin the Dark Derby in tow. Alongside this new wave of fighters was Ulysses Boothe and Ace Dixon who were undeterred by the presence of the Fortune Hunters and continued their assault on the Mercury.[1]

Once again armed with aerial torpedoes, the Warhawks attempted to blow up the Murcury's gas bags as the Brigands ran fighter interference as they had before. Additionally, the Dark Derby began to manoeuvre its way into position to open its broadside cannons and shoot at the Mercury itself.[1]

Despite the best efforts of the Black Hats and their zeppelin, the combined firepower of the remaining Blake Aviation fighters, the Fortune Hunters, and Zachary, the Black Hat fighters were all shot down along with Boothe and Dixon. Zachary himself destroyed the Dark Derby by blowing up the broadside cannons[1], ironically the same way he had destroyed one of Blake's previous zeppelins the Promised Land[3]. Blake, although confused and still suspicious at Zachary's motived to save him, thanked the pirate nonetheless and with the Black Hats now cleared, the Mercury could continue its voyage unimpeded.[1]

Strategy[]

  • As you are defending the zeppelin, not attacking it, do not use torpedoes on it. Instead save them for the Dark Derby.
  • Be careful with using Flak rockets near the Mercury as you want to keep it as intact as possible, and the AoE of the flak rockets can damage/destroy its engines.
  • Keeping the zeppelin turrets alive will help to distract and further damage the Black Hats.
  • Target the Black Hat Warhawks first, as they are the ones carrying the torpedoes. Without the Warhawks, the Black Hats can't damage the Mercury.
    • Additionally, attempt to shoot down any torpedoes that have been launched at the Mercury. They beep when in the air, giving some indication.
    • Flak rockets are excellent for destroying launched torpedoes, and can also deal good damage against the Warhawks. High Explosive rockets can work against the Warhawks, as they are slow and big enough to be hit if you are accurate, but flaks are far superior for this.
