The Twain was a Zeppelin featured in Crimson Skies. It was a cargo zeppelin operated by Blake Aviation Security which was ambushed by the Black Hats pirate gang and their zeppelin the Dark Derby.[1]
The Twain was travelling in convoy with another Blake Aviation zeppelin the Mercury[1] when a large group of Black Hat fighters ambushed the convoy in a premeditated strike[2]. Armed with Curtiss-Wright P2 Warhawks and Fairchild F611 Brigands, they targeted the Twain first using Aerial torpedoes launched by the Warhawks to pop the gas bags while the Brigands distracted the defensive Blake Aviation William & Colt Peacemaker 370s.[1]
Attempted help for the Twain came in the unlikely form of Nathan Zachary and the Fortune Hunters who discovered the Black Hat plans and attempted to save the convoy. Unfortunately, they arrived too late to save the Twain which had already suffered two blown gas bags by the time the Fortune Hunter zeppelin the Pandora arrived on the scene. The Twain eventually suffered a third torpedo hit which blew a third gas bag, sealing the fate of the zeppelin which crashed below the cloud layer.[1]
Strategy[]
- There's very little you can do to save the Twain, as it will always be hit by two aerial torpedoes shortly after the beginning of the mission, even if you are in a super fast interceptor with a Nitro-booster. This leaves it with only one gas bag left before it is destroyed.
- Carrying and using torpedoes on the Twain is a big no-no. You're defending the zeppelin, not attacking it. Save any torpedoes you have for the Dark Derby.
- Keep a look out for Black Hat torpedoes in the air and try and shoot them down. Torpedoes can be targeted and destroyed before they hit their target, giving you the best chance to save the zeppelin.
- Target Black Hat Warhawks first, as they're the ones with the torpedoes to target the Twain. If you can down all the Warhawks, and any torpedoes they launch, there's a chance you can save the Twain.
- Flak rockets are excellent for taking down launched torpedoes, as well as dealing good damage to the Warhawks. High Explosive rockets are less useful but the Warhawks are large enough and slow enough to allow you to hit them with one if you're precise.
- Avoid damaging the zeppelin turrets as they can distract the Black Hats, as well as deal extra damage to them.
- Also try to avoid damaging the engines of the zeppelin.
Notes[]
- With a fast enough aircraft such as a Curtiss-Wright J2 Fury or Hughes Bloodhawk, and some expert flying, it might be possible to prevent the destruction of the Twain. However, due to the extensive damage it suffers at the beginning of the mission, it requires a lot of skill and luck to find and shoot down all the Black Hat Warhawks and whatever torpedoes they fire before the Twain is hit again.
