Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Federal single-party communist state

Joseph Stalin

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, Russian: Союз Советских Социалистических Республик, tr. Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik; abbreviated СССР, SSSR), informally known as the Soviet Union (Russian: Советский Союз, tr. Sovetsky Soyuz), was a constitutionally socialist state that has existed on the territory of most of the former Russian Empire in Eurasia since 1922

The Soviet Union has a single-party political system dominated by the Communist Party. Nominally a union of Soviet republics with the capital in Moscow, de facto the Soviet Union is a highly centralized state with a planned economy.

In 1917, a series of revolutions crippled the power of the Tsarist autocracy and led to five years of civil war. While the revolutions and the civil war which followed had more than a hundred distinct participating groups, these can be generally classified as the Communist "Red" Russians and the counterrevolutionary "White" Russians. With the collapse of the Eastern Front, the Great War's battlelines shifted wildly as German forces redeployed to the Western Front.

However, despite taking Moscow and forcing Nicolas II to flee, the Red Russians were unable to completely remove their enemies. The White Russians fell back, forming a guerrila force that continues to strike at the established government. Occasional shooting wars still flare up, often deep in the Siberian hinterland.

Following Lenin's death, Joseph Stalin became General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, leader of all the Soviet republics. Between these two men, a true Communist nation has formed in Russia, calling itself the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Given the increasing tensions in Europe, the USSR has focused on securing its own borders, primary though focusing on the Soviet Air Forces, which are now one of the most highly-regarded in the world. Relying on their powerful Moscow-class zeppelins and their large contingent of Hughes Devastators, the Soviet Union fields an enormous military that cannot be taken lightly.

International Relations[]

  • Pacifica- The USSR maintains diplomatic relations with Pacifica and is on good terms with them.
  • Alaska- Relations faltering as Russian emigrants are enacting the last stages of the Russian Civil War, much to the chagrin of other Alaskans.
  • The USSR has a famously complex relationship with the People's Collective - on the one hand, they are both socialist states. On the other, the USSR considers religion the opiate of the masses and the People's Collective emphasises the word "godless" in "godless Communists".
